Lang & Heyne Augustus I Rose Gold
Augustus I, Elector of Saxony, ruled the region with great spirit and drive during the 1500s. He laid the foundation for Dresden’s famous art and science collection. He commissioned the legendary astronomical clock of Baldewein to show the world he, Augustus I, could control time, even the most complex planetary motions, with the assistance of a machine.
The Augustus I timepiece is a revolution from the house of Lang & Heyne because it houses a mechanical calculation machine and memory function for special anniversaries. The idea sprung from a customer request for a mechanical wristwatch that could remind them of key dates – in the same way Outlook tells you when it’s your anniversary!
Amazing, but true. The inventor at Lang & Heyne took this project on with much gusto. Along with the task of creating a calculating mechanism, the challenge was to position the program-ring with the various indication/dates in windows that made them legible but didn’t hinder the main timekeeping function of the watch or destroy the Lang & Heyne DNA. The result was achieved with the development of in-house Calibre VII featuring a normal calendar and special event calendar that work in perfect harmony.
Each movement is custom-made for its owner with the calculating machine purpose built and the event calendar (program-ring) designed to spec. It allows for 12 special dates or anniversaries to be recorded and tracked. The respective age/anniversary year is calculated and displayed opposite the date, month and year indicator.
The solid silver dial is further enhanced with guilloching and elegant Roman Numerals. The hand-winding movement is fully embellished to justifiably decorate the complex three-story column wheel within the three modes. Two micro differential gears combined with a sophisticated program-rail to ensure the correct calculation is shown. This complex watch, set in a solid 18ct rose gold case, comprises over 340 parts and yet retains an air of elegance and restrained dignity.
