A special chronograph… fit for life on Mars!
The deserts of Dhofar, the largest governorate in the Sultanate of Oman, have been said to resemble the surface of Mars because they are covered in sedimentary structures dating back to the Paleocene and Eocene epochs, as well as salt domes of the South Oman Salt Basin and ancient river beds. This is precisely why this area was chosen as the site for the joint collaboration between the Austrian Space Forum and the Oman National Steering Comittee, for the AMADEE-18 #AMADEE18 Mars field simulation.
Directed by a Mission Support Center in Austria, the tests were designed to simulate and monitor conditions equivalent to a Mars landing. Keeping track of time during the simulations is important for both the field crew and the Mission Support Center. So when it came to sourcing a partner to provide the timing technology who better than FORTIS with its long-established association with space and aviation.
FORTIS undertook the challenge to design a custom-made watch to help #simulateMars.
We’re getting closer! During various tests and missions the Official Cosmonauts AMADEE-18 Chronograph has been keeping track of the time needed to complete various tasks. These critical time measurements are vital for future astronauts travelling to Mars as their EVA (Extra Vehicular Activities) will be crucial. An additional challenge taken into account is the 10 minutes delay in communication between earth and Mars.
Fortis’s AMADEE18 chronograph allows test subjects to monitor their life support systems, including oxygen supply, and log them for further research as well as allowing astronauts to stop the time in order to simulate when mission control based on earth should reply on their questions.
Why not join the race to Mars in a grounded way by wearing your very own AMADEE-18 chronograph suited to life on Earth just as much as life on Mars.
