Ever wondered what a skeletonised check pattern looks like?
Karo is the German word for a check pattern and Alexander Shorokhoff has taken this as inspiration for its delicate Karo collection.
By combining this traditional motive with a contemporary horological interpretation, the innovators at Shorokhoff have created a perfect symbiosis of modernity and tradition.
The cool skeletonised check design emerges from the dial via enhanced treatment, high-quality finishes and elaborate craftsmanship.
The number “3” in the name of the watch represents the three different layers of metal that comprise the dial and afford the skeletonised appearance: silver-coloured, yellow-gold-plated, rose-gold-plated. All three “checked grids” are connected to each other to form a harmonious, interwoven pattern with an intriguing 3D look. Each level interacts with the next to provide structure without closing in the dial. Whimsical flame-blued hands stand out perfectly from the dial to clearly indicate the time and optimise legibility.
Optional bands for this piece are available but the specially-selected checked, textile band rounds off the theme beautifully. Different colours have been incorporated into a fresh, sixties-inspired check pattern that plucks out the blue highlights on the watch dial to bring the complete look together. This is definitely a watch for an individual with unique style and a sense of daring. As a second variant of a croc leather strap can be selected. This option affords a more subtle look that showcases the elegant and traditional side of the watch.
Another important component of the Karo 3 is the partially skeletonized and hand-engraved chronograph movement. This embellishment requires several days of painstaking hand-work by a skilled engraver to elaborately skeletonize and engrave the movement to such detail.
The 3 bridges on the upper movement plate, which can be seen through the checked pattern, have a filigree hand-finished sunray engraving to catch and reflect light and shade. Additionally, this chronograph offers a stopwatch with totalising function, which can be activated with the upper pusher. The lower pusher returns the second hand to its original position.
Finishing off the design is Shorokhoff’s trademark, large number “60” which indicates the 60 minutes of an hour and the revolutionary time of the 60s era. Together with the silver hour applications on the outer ring of the dial, the 60 facilitates timing and dial orientation.
Overall, Karo 3 evokes a sense of modernity coupled with traditional craftsmanship. It looks crisp, stylish and alive, yet elegant and high-end. Both models are available in a limited edition of only 49 pieces (each band variant) at a top price-performance ratio.
