“La Mitad del Mundo” is an equatorial monument in San Antonio de Pichincha in Ecuador. The monument is located about 23 kilometers north of the capital Quito and marks the location where Charles Marie de La Condamine, traveling with a French expedition in 1736, determined the exact position of the equator.
Alexander Shorokhoff’s colourful EQUA timepiece is an homage to this significant geographic and celestial point. It artistically interprets the equinox at the equator, symbol of the beginning of spring and autumn, in two semi rings on the dial, each of them representing 12 hours. The vibrant orange of the upper ring symbolises the heat and fire of day, and the cool blue of the lower ring, alludes to mild equatorial nights. Just like the equator enclosing the ocean, the ring closes around the centre of the dial symbolising water with its gleaming light or dark mother-of-pearl.
Colour contrasting hands and oversized numerals denote this timepeice as a member of Shorokhoff’s Avantgarde collection. And the depth of colour play is up to the wearer: a steel milanese band plays it cool while a bright orange leather band adds vibrancy. The choice of balance is yours.
