Around 660 BC, Doric Greeks founded a colony called Byzantium on the European shore of the Bosporus which runs through modern Istanbul connecting Asia to Europe. From here the history of this fascinating capital began.
Thanks to its colourful and multicultural past, modern Istanbul combines both Greek and Roman heritage with a display of Ottoman splendour, memories and art representing these important periods are preserved invaluable jewellery collections and architecture within the region.
Alexander Shorokhoff’s Byzantium Collection honours the eventful and fascinating history of the city of Istanbul and draws upon its great diversity for inspiration.
The dial unites three significant historical influences. It is divided into 4 sectors by a cross signifying The region’s early Christian history. Each sector is filled with stylized ornamentation inspired by flowing Arabian calligraphy. Finally, the entire dial design is enclosed by a meander – a motif from the art of Greek antiquity. As in Istanbul, the three influences work together to form a unified and exceptionally rich and interesting whole. The hands are blue or gold-plated (depending on the model) and the hour markers at 3, 6, 9 and 12 are decorated with high-quality diamonds.
The warm golden dial tone evokes a sense of old-world, complementing the design and inspiration behind one of Alexander Shorokhoff’s more intriguing pieces while the steel case affords functionality ensuring a stylish finish to any outfit.
