Description
Hanhart Pioneer 417 ES
Over 60 years ago, Hanhart’s aviators were flying the skies on the wrists of German pilots and since then have covered more air miles than the space station (well, maybe). These decades of trials and tests, faults and feedback have provided excellent resources for the designers and watchmakers at Hanhart, allowing them to continually improve on the historic design of the much-loved Pioneer.
The 417 ES celebrates the return of the legendary chronograph and delivers robustness, reliability and excellent legibility in-line with the core requirements of aviation timepieces. The letters ES stand for Edelstahl, or stainless steel in English, denoting the sturdy case material which brings this watch to modern-day standards. Another modernisation is the slight increase in case diameter from 39 to 42mm. However, despite this increase in size and the highly domed sapphire crystal case front, the case thickness is maintained at a reduced height of 13.3mm to retain an element of its heritage. The 417 ES also carries Hanhart’s fluted, bi-directional bezel with red location marker and signature bi-compax dial configuration.
Die-hard Hanhart fans will appreciate the use of numerals and fonts from the original watch series that have been carefully recreated and enhanced with the addition of highly luminous SuperLuminov material for optimal legibility in dimly lit environments while during daylight, the effect is minimised thanks to the subtle cream tone utilised.
To ensure the 417 not only looks the part but also delivers precision and reliability, a robust, Swiss-made, hand-wound SW510 calibre beats behind the screwed stainless steel case back to keep excellent time. In addition to a stopwatch function, the 417 ES offers a 58 hour power reserve when fully wound. Furthermore, to improve the durability and application of the original aviator, the 417 ES has now been pressure tested up to 10 bar (100m) increasing its scope beyond the cockpit for the requirements of an active, modern life.
This is a beautifully engineered, enhancement of a classic Hanhart pilot chronograph that will please enthusiasts and rise to the demands of modern-day living.
