Alexander Shorokhoff’s “Los Craneos“ collection is dedicated to Frida Kahlo, renowned Mexican painter. Her style was naïve, raw and real. Her works often featured impressions from her bright world combined with elements that alluded to her personal torment stemming from her physical disability following a road accident.
The skulls pay homage to a very important aspect of Mexican culture and mythology as well as serve to remind us all of our mortality.
Los Craneos 1 is monochromatic and masculine, hinting at the heavy toll Frida’s infirmity and back brace took on her life. In contrast, Los Craneous 2 features colour and movement to underline the happy and colourful side of Frida Kahlo’s art.
The two collections serve to highlight that although Frida was frequently constrained by pain, this did not keep her from creating highly artistic paintings which are still appreciated and admired today.
To capture this exuberance, Alexander Shorokhoff filled the dial with life. The skulls on Los Craneos 2 are covered by colour and enamel, resulting in a much more emotional, vivid and dynamic appearance. The colour of the enamel coating of each sector has been selected thoughtfully to convey the transmission of artistic emotion. To enhance the effect, a mostly transparent enamel is used, giving the underlying colour additional depth. The backside of the skulls is given a matt treatment, hand-engraved with a special stylus tool to continue the fine, artistic flair of each piece.
After this treatment, the sectors are artfully finished in a typical Mexican tradition inspired by ancient Aztec patterns. For optimal legibility, the different sectors and their elements are subdivided into hours.
To frame the design, Alexander Shorokhoff set the background as a noble, champagne colour and covered the 62 striking metallic studs in yellow gold to heighten the contrast.
The case for the two automatic movements is made of stainless steel. The movements are accordingly hand-engraved and refined and can be seen through the glass windows in the generous case back.
Los Craneos 2 is produced in a limited edition of 88 pieces with champagne coloured dial and Los Craneos 3 in a limited edition of 65 pieces with dark grey metallic dial, giving you individuality and choice as well as artistic licence.
