As one of Alexander Shorokhoff’s most adventurous series, in terms of design, the Kandy Avantgarde collection is strikingly unique. Everything about this watch, from its stunning, black quadratic case to its dramatic dial, is pure artistry.
In his own words, designer Alexander Shorokhoff says: “The Kandy Avantgarde timepiece is extraordinary, wildly artistic and innovative, and yet can be worn every day. With this piece, in particular, we epitomise our philosophy of creating “Art on the wrist“.
Despite the various colours and forms on the dial, there is no chaos. In fact, the interplay of elements has been thoughtfully laid down to convey a feeling of harmony. The powerful red and black sub dials are combined with softer tones like light blue and green to balance the colour spectrum and please the eye. The most important function of the watch – legibility at a glance – is achieved by segmenting the dial into blocks of colour for visual distinction and the intentional use bold hands for the hour, minute and second.
The reverse side of the watch is no less fascinating. In typical Shorokhoff style, even the underside and movement have been given an artistic treatment. Set into the back of the case are four round glass windows in red, blue and yellow which provide a glimpse to the engraved movement within. The circular window shapes are proportioned exactly to match the edges of the case, thus maintaining design balance while delivering diversity of form.
The case itself is also more than meets the eye. The middle section of the case is milled in two channels and one groove is filled with 18 ct rose gold and the other, black coated wire mirroring the subdial colour scheme on the case front. The glossy black PVD frames the dial in a most dramatic manner for maximum impact on the wrist.
Every element of Alexander Shorokhoff’s Kandy Avantgarde timepiece is well-planned and perfectly executed. All elements add up to an exceptionally interesting and evocative timepiece that will delight for many years to come.
